Kippered Herring Salad Sandwich (1941)

This was an odd sandwich as it had solid ingredients but they didn’t “add up to more that the sum of their parts.” Fine, but not great. Enter the mustardy, spicy, warm Awaze seasoning blend to perk things up and make ingredient come more alive. Can’t wait to try that blend on beef or chicken.

Fig and Lime Sandwich (1936)

I didn’t really give this sandwich much thought before making it. Which why I initially made with the rind and pith on. And yeah, you could zest the lime and add it or mix in lime juice with the fig concoction, but I really liked biting into the sandwich an experiencing the pop of lime you get by biting into it.

This was a fun one. First of all, I learned that hot dogs and eggs seem to be pretty universally loved in the hispanic households. And that a lot of folks seem to think hot dogs aren’t sold already cooked (for the record, we’re I writing this recipe, I’d 100% put some color on that meat). A tasty combo that had me thinking ketchup as the plus up. Until I remembered that I had that Jawndiments Cherry Pepper Mayonnaise. A little sweet, a little heat, and a little richness.

I’ve been following Kyle aka The Vulgar Chef (fair warning, he calls himself that for two reasons) for a while. He creates some pretty out there recipes most of which, I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole. But this, this I wanted to try very much. Turns out I used too much water for the gravy (I stupidly followed the instructions on the packet) for the cheese to set up properly but that didn’t really affect the flavor. This carb bomb of a sandwich was tasty!

Boy howdy, folks were absolutely certain that the meat I used, and not the surprisingly large amount of salt called for, was the reason for the salt overload. The only chance this would’ve had is if the roast beef was cook with zero salt which A) wouldn’t happen and B) wouldn’t guarantee to offset that much added salt. To take it down a notch I added a tomato and horseradish. One to absorbs some of the saltiness, the other to punch through it. And for the most part it worked.

This sandwich had a bit of a tang to it. Now, some folks opined that just because it called for “French Mustard” that they might not have meant Dijon. I assumed that because Grey Poupon debuted int he United States in 1866 that it was. Either way, it wasn’t really a welcome ingredient as mustard of any stripe would have messed with the flavor profile of the sandwich. Adding almond butter brought some richness and acted as counter balance to the tanginess.

This was one tasty sandwich. The warms spices played well with the beef and onion. Some recommended to cook it upside down in a pan to get a crust and I have to agree. That would be fabulous. And since we live close to Hamilton Euromarket, I was able to leverage two Bulgarian ingredient to plus it up.

Atomic Potato Chips Company Fried Dill Pickle Potato Chips (United States)
These were great chips. The kind you buy at the fair. Huge potatoes freshly fried and seasoned well. A solid dill flavor thought not the punch of dill I am used to with dill flavored chips. Still, well-balanced and tasty.

Another great flavor that delivered the ketchup and french fries experience. Were they billed as just ketchup flavored chips, they’d of been a bit overwhelming as the ketchup flavor wasn’t super strong. But that was by design so you could tasty the fried potato more. Nicely played.
