Curried Egg and Oyster Sandwich (1916)
Salads, Sandwiches, and Chafing Dish Recipes
Rating: 3 1/2
Plus up: Slap Ya Mama Hot Cajun Seasoning
Plussed up rating: 5
Once again, I find myself with a sandwich recipe that uses ingredients I like but finds a way to make them not great. The problem with sandwich was textural, all the way. Chopped oysters and chopped hard boiled eggs may taste ok enough together, but yeah, no. For some reason I failed to address the texture with the plus up. Still, the Slap Ya Mama Hot Cajun seasoning did perk things up nicely.

Collard Melt (recent history)
Turkey and The Wolf: Flavor Trippin’ in New Orleans
Rating: 10
Plus up: None
In what has seemingly become a tradition, I once again turned to the cookbook from Turkey and The Wolf for my birthday sandwich. I’ve done The Tomato (twice) and last year The Bologna. This year require a little planning ahead but man, was it worth it. Those delicious, long-cooked collard greens went perfectly with the cherry pepper Russian dressing and cole slaw. Then you bring toasted rye bread and melty Swiss cheese into the equation? Forget about it. 10 all the way.

Bobotee Sandwich (1902)
Mrs. Rorer's Vegetable Cookery and Meat Substitutes
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Gochugaru chili flakes
Plus up rating: 7
There was a lot of speculation in the comment as to whether this was somehow related to the South African dish Bobotie. Could be although perhaps not the baked aspect of it. Nonetheless, this was a pretty tasty and hearty vegetarian sandwich. And given what I’ve seen from other vegetarian recipes from around 1902, if you were served this you’ve be pretty happy. Combining onion, red bell pepper, almonds, Granny Smith apple, curry powder, and lemon juice made for not only a nice combo of textures but flavors as well. Plussed it with some Korean Gochugari chili flakes which added little spice, a slight sweetness, and a bare hint of smoke.

Government Sandwich (1914)
Meatless Cookery
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Black pepper, chopped chives, and parsley
Plussed up ratings: 6 1/2
Meatless Cookery gave zero clue as to why this was named the Government Sandwich. Thankfully, the sandwich was much tastier than you’d expect from something named that. It was a pretty tasty, pimento cheese-esque sandwich. Adding a little black pepper, chives, and parsley to kind of round things out nicely.

Cheese and Sardine Sandwich (1930)
PET Recipes
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Daybreak Everyday Furikake Seasoning
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2
Pretty bare bones, this one was. What was funny is that despite this recipe being put out by a company that makes evaporated milk, that ingredient was only in this to make the cream cheese spreadable. The original was the sum of it’s parts - cream cheese and sardines. I plussed it up with the Daybreak Everyday Furikake Seasoning which added a little nuttiness, salt, and garlic to the mix which, frankly, did help. Oh, as for the sardine shirt? Well, I got it here.

Spiced Tomato Sauce Sandwich (1912)
The Chafing Dish
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Sautéed sliced hot dog
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2
This sandwich was interesting. The spiced tomato sauce amounted to a rustic ketchup between toast. Not bad but also needed a little somethin’ somethin’. Cheese did cross my mind as a plus up when I read the recipe but after I tasted it, I just had to break my own “rule” of not adding meat to sandwiches that don’t already have some. It was screaming for some hot dog action. Btw, that “rule” is intended to prevent a sandwich having it’s focus stolen by the introduction of meat to the equation. In this case, I felt it complemented the tomato sauce. Of course, that just might be me backing into a justification lol.

Smörgåstårta (Sweden)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 8 1/2
Plus up: Capers
Plussed up rating: 9
I have put this off for a long time. Mainly because it is usually made with entire loaf of bread. For some reason it never dawned on me to just make a single stacked sandwich until I saw this recipe. Some folks opined that I should’ve had shrimp in there as well. I did have cook shrimp to use for the decorating but decided to leave it out at the last minute. This was tasty with it’s vegetable layer, smoked salmon and dill layer, and rich egg salad layer but it was still a lot. It’s one of those “I am not making this unless folks are coming over” type sandwiches.

Nashville Hot Potato Chips (Canada)
President’s Choice
These potato chips were pretty ok, in my book. The interesting thing is (despite my verbal error in the video) they did not attempt to make this a Nashville Hot Chicken flavor. Instead opting to just go for the Nashville Hot part. Which they did pretty well. Didn’t blow me away but I enjoyed them.
