Meeting House Sandwiches (Cook Islands)
International Sandwich Sunday
Original rating: Egg salad 8.5 | Tuna 7.5
Plus up: No plus up on egg salad | capers
Plussed up rating: 8.5
Yes, for International Sandwich Sunday we popped over to the Cook Islands for some Meeting House Sandwiches. I think this is the first time Iβve done two sandwiches in on video on International Sandwich Sunday. The egg salad with the mayonnaise and chives was quite tasty. But what really amped it up was the white pepper. Loved that. I think it might even better with sliced green onions tbh. The tuna, while tasty with the minced onions felt like it needed a little zhuzhing up. Enter, capers. Boom, instantly pickley pop to contrast the tuna and the richness of mayonnaise. Arugula would good albeit a different direction.

Salmon and Cucumber Sandwich (1974)
Our History
Original rating: 7
Plus up: Black pepper
Plussed up rating: 7.5
This one of those sandwiches that very much feels like it is of an era. That we had to soak the cucumber slices in French dressing kinda says it all to me. Whatβs interesting is the reddish orange, slightly sweet concoction sold today is very different from the original version which was more akin to a regular vinaigrette. While this sandwich had a lot going for it, toasted bread, cucumber, salmon, and mayonnaise, it isnβt something Iβd crave or feel compelled to make again.

Banana and Ham Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches
Original rating: 4
Minus down: Frankβs RedHot Dill Pickle Hot Sauce
Plussed up rating: 2
This sandwich was notable for the odd ratio of banana to ham. My suspicion is that, due to the recipe being developed during the Great Depression, it went light on the ham as it was expensive. No idea if thatβs true but this ratio just didnβt work. Taking inspiration from banana vinegar I thought, βletβs try a vinegar based hot sauce!β Leading to the inevitable minus down. Do not do this at home. That said, I think this might be ripe for a Recipe Remix so stay tuned.

Starlight Sizzler (1977)
Ken Doddβs Butty Book
Original rating: 6.5
Plus up: Salt, pepper, and fresh thyme
Plussed up rating: 7.5
Ken Dodd may have been a maniacal comic on stage (his shows would run 5 hours Iβm told), some of the sandwiches in this book are downright tasty. Sure the instructions couldβve been clearer. After all, who among has been told to βadd to grated cheddar cheese, cooked chopped sliced onion?β But the combo of cheese and onion is fantastic. Even more so when the onions have a little color on βem. Add in a slice of tomato and this was a delightful sandwich. Now, Iβd construct it a bit differently but I make sandwiches as written so here we are. With a little salt, black pepper, and fresh thyme, the sandwich got even tastier.

Chef JosΓ© AndrΓ©sβ Omelette Sandwich
our history
Original rating: 10
Plus up: None. Seriously, none
This was ridiculously tasty. If you make no other sandwiches highlighted on Sandwiches of History, make The Tomato from Turkey and The Wolf and this one. The soft bread sopped up the kewpie mayo and oil from the tuna. The salsa de tomate (recipe link) provided a sweetness and depth. And the furikake (affiliate link) with itβs sesame seeds and nori just kicked it over the edge. Definitely going to make this again.

Lettuce Sandwich (1900)
The Sandwich Book
Original rating: 0
Redone with modified mayonnaise: 3
Plus up: Granny Smith apple and salt
Plussed up rating: 3.5
Well, from the high that was the Omelette Sandwich from Chef JosΓ© AndrΓ©s to this nightmare. I make recipes βas writtenβ which means I am subject to some poorly written recipes sometimes. To wit, this:
How they expected the mayonnaise dressing to come together is beyond me. Unlike egg white, beating an entire egg longer isnβt going to magically transform it into mayonnaise. And yes, both the egg and the butter were room temperature. At any rate, sandwich suffered from other ailments. Like how the peanut butter and tangy mayonnaise completely dominated the star of the show, lettuce. Yeah, I will not be making this again. Ever.

Saturday Sandwich
our history
Original rating: 9
Plus up: The Pepper Plant Hot Sauce
Plussed up rating: 9.5
There was no way this was not going to be good. Avocado mashed with salt, bacon, over easy egg, and American cheese from the deli? Like shooting fish a barrel, my friend (which, now that I type that, sounds like a really bad idea). Plussed it up with The Pepper Plant hot sauce which features jalapeΓ±os, rehydrated onions, and rehydrated garlic, despite itβs brown color. It is delicious. Highly recommend you pick some up whether itβs via this goofy affiliate link or anywhere, really.

In The Chips with Barry
Brets Goat Cheese & Espelette Pepper Potato Chips
I can honestly say that I donβt think Iβve ever tasted and espelette pepper. No matter, these potato chips from France were magnifique! They use actual powdered goat cheese and perfectly balanced with not only the pepper but the potato flavor as well. If you canβt tell, Brets is one of my favorite global chip brands. Highly recommend you pick up any flavor if you see them

Covered Bridge Cheddar Dark Russet Potato Chips
Covered Bridge out of Canada, recently suffered a tragedy when itβs main manufacturing facility burned to the ground. Fortunately, the company is on it to fire up chip making in other places while they furiously rebuild. Which is great to hear because that means these tasty numbers will more available. Dark russet potatoes taste deeper and more potatoey than regular russets (imho). Usually, if we see them at all, they are plainly salted. But Covered Bridge not only chose a great flavor to match them up with but did in a nice, balanced way. Again, if you see βem, get βem

7-11 Smoked Gouda Potato Chips
Alas, they canβt all be home runs. And despite 7-11 using both natural AND artificial flavors, the smoked gouda was pretty much non-existent. They were still crunchy and lightly salty so theyβre not rated zero stars. But come on, man. Ya gotta pay off the main flavor at least.

Can It Sandwich?
Yes, every other Saturday I take the chips I reviewed that week and see if they can sandwich. The origin of this was the glorious Tayto Cheese and Onion crisp sandwich. Be warned though, I dance at the beginning of Can It Sandwich? episodes. Soβ¦yeah. Youβve been warned.

Barry Is Cooking Again
Salsa de Tomate Frito
This tasty little tomato sauce came about because of the stellar Omelette Sandwich from Chef JosΓ© AndrΓ©s. In his video, he used a tomato past that he makes and markets. At $13 a jar it is a little spendy but I was ready to buy just the same. But when shipping ended up costing about twice that along, I had another thought. That being that this seems like a staple sauce and surely there are recipes for it online. Sure enough, there were. I must admit, when putting this together I didnβt think it would be any great shake. Something about cooking the mixture covered for an hour and then uncovered for thirty minutes more brought out massive flavor. Highly recommend making just because.
