And we are back with another semi-comprhensive weekly recap. I heard no complaints about this expanding to include other channels from the BEU (Barry Extended Universeâą) so I am going to keep it up. This week only adds one potato chip review. I get into why down in that section. Ok, enough jibber jabberinâ, letâs get to sandwichinâ!

RÀksmörgÄs (Sweden)
International Sandwich Sunday
Original rating: 9
Plus up: Additional slice of mayonnaised bread
Plussed up rating: 9
Ah yes, the RĂ€ksmörgĂ„s. A tasty, Swedish open-faced affair. Deceptively simply yet delicious. Sure, I made Swedish rye bread from scratch as well as purportedly Swedish mayonnaise. But you donât have to do all that. Just buy some light right over at World Market/Cost Plus or IKEA, add a little lemon to regular mayonnaise and youâre off to the races. Of course, donât use the shrimp I used. Apparently they use smaller, sweeter shrimp. In my defense, these were the smallest at all the markets I went to. And to be honest, it was still delicious. Adding a second piece of bread slathered in mayonnaise was fine but didnât really move the needle.

Waffle Sandwich
Our History
Original rating: 5.5
Plus up: Buttermilk Ranch Dressing | Habanero Maple Syrup
Plussed up rating: 6 | 7.5
Ok, Iâm not going to pretend this was anywhere near healthy. Eggo waffles slathered in mayonnaise with processed American cheese, deli ham, and turkey? Yeah, no. Still, things that are wickedly bad for us can be tasty and this was no exception. The Eggo waffles are a little too sweet for me but if you took this concept with good waffles, cheddar cheese, backed off on the mayonnaise and maybe reduce the meat by half, now youâre getting somewhere. I tried plussing it up from some Buttermilk Ranch that made from a powder (that I also made) and it was ok. The habanero maple syrup though was tast-y! Some folks wonder where I bought it. I didnât I made it. Just dumped a small bottle of maple syrup in a pot then tossed in three habaneros that I had cut slits into in there as well. Heated it up, then let it steep off heat for about an hour. Took out the peppers, and put the syrup back in the bottle. Easy peasy.

Ham and Peanut Butter Sandwich (1942)
Wartime Recipes
Original rating: 5
Plus up: Mrs. H.S. Ballâs Chutney
Plussed up rating: 7.5
This sandwich recipe came from the section in Wartime Recipes entitled âSandwiches for the man on duty.â Peanut butter and ham actually make sense to me. Even the vinegar kinda made sense. But it was quite dry. So to plus it up, I opted for the fruity sweetness of the oddly named Mrs. H.S. Ballâs Chutney (available via this handy affiliate link or your local World Market/Cost Plus). The fruit in the chutney worked really well with both the smoky ham and the peanut butter. Itâs good stuff.

Grilled Salmon Sandwich (1964)
The Sandwich Book
Original rating: 6.5
Plus up: Ras El Hanout seasoning blend
Plussed up rating: 7.5
I knew when I read the name of this sandwich that it would nearly impossible for this sandwich to call for grilled salmon. Sure enough, it was grilled how a grilled cheese is grilled. Still, the combo of flavors, including the cheese, came together nicely once heated. Plussing it up with Ras El Hanout (recipe link) and it kick of heat and warm spices made the sandwich really start to vibrateâŠin a good way.

Hot Honey Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches
Original rating: 6
Plus up: Chili flakes and a whisper of peanut butter on a second slice of toast
Plussed up rating: 8.5
This âsandwichâ was tasty butâŠI donât know. While some folks are rigidly dogmatic about âem, Iâm pretty okay with the concept of open-faced sandwiches. This, however, was so far removed from an actual sandwich that, well, I just donât know. Naturally my plus up had to involve another slice of toast. But also some red chili flakes to kick it up a notch and a whisper of peanut butter as to not overpower the honey. And man, did that work!

Creamed Cheese and Chipped Beef Sandwich (1941)
500 Tasty Sandwiches
Original rating: 4
Plus up: Dill pickle relish and a leaf of lettuce
Plussed up rating: 6.5
As weâve seen on Sandwiches of History, sometimes a sandwichâs name is deceptive (looking at you, Peanut Butter Sandwich below this entry). However this one really was just the two ingredients in the name. Go figure. It wasnât bad but it also wasnât interesting. So I hauled off and plussed it up with some dill pickle relish and a leaf of lettuce. I opted for the relish rather than just a pickle (which I would not hate) because I wanted a little more complexity. And though it really did deliver, it is unlikely I will be making this again.

Chinese Five Spice 8
Sriracha Basil 7.5
Mikeâs Hot Honey 7.5
Granny Smith 7
Sharp cheddar cheese 6
Banana 5.5
Chicken 4
Bacon 8
The last time we saw the Peanut Butter Sandwich, I was flummoxed. I wasnât quite sure what to plus it up with. So I turned to you. And man, did you show up. So many great suggestions! In fact, that rather than doing four like I had intentionally planned, I opted to do ten. Obviously making ten full sandwiches or even ten half sandwiches just wasnât in the card. I am mortal. So I opted for little bites. Which worked out great as it added up to be just a little over a full sandwich. You can see the rating of the plus ups above so I wonât go into detail here but suffice to say, they all worked quite nicely. So, thank you!

In The Chips with Barry
After doing three regular review videos and one Can It Sandwich? a week for years, I decided to dial it back to âwhenever I get around to itâ when Sandwiches of History took off. That just left one problem, an overabundance of chips. When Iâm out and about I canât help but buy a flavor Iâve not seen before. Plus, nice folks send them to me from around the world! I canât just not review âem. So Iâve settled into what I hope is a sustainable a pattern. Alternating between the old style three reviews and CIS in one week and just one review in the next. Weâll see how it goes.
As for Humble Creamy Dill potato chips, they were ultimately kind of disappointing. The flavor was good but there was a decided lack of crispness to them. I really like that the bag is commercially compostable. The bag has always been a dark cloud over the reviews. Iâd love to see more companies adopt them. Of course, if the bag is the reason for the loss in crispness, then theyâll have to go back to the drawing board.

After watching the 10 peanut butter sandwich plus ups my granddaughter and I decided to give a few of them a try. We used crackers and only plussed up the peanut butter. We were out of several of the other ingredientsâŠ. The winner by a far clip was curry powder. We both went back for seconds. So thanks for giving us something fun and delicious to do on a cloudy afternoon.
