First off, sorry for the delayed send this week. Between the holidays and holiday travel, this one slid a little. Still, plenty to get through. Btw, if you haven’t bought tickets for Sandwiches of History: LIVE! yet and you live in Pittsburgh, I am sorry to say you’re out of luck. If you live in Philadelphia, you’re in luck as we’ve added a second show! If you’re in Boston you might want to get on it as tickets are almost gone. If you live in New Orleans, wake the kids and phone the neighbors because ticket sales there are laaaaaaggggging. Don’t want to cancel that show, I’ve got Chef Mason Hereford lined up to guest star! And lastly, if you live in Nashville, you can get ahead of the crowd by getting your tickets now. More dates/cities to be announced soon.
Ok, on to the sandwiches.

Peanut Butter Sandwich of sort (1948)
Watkins Cook Book
Rating: 2 1/2
Plus up: None
“Finally, the great taste of peanut butter with stuffed olives and horseradish!” said no one ever. Well, except the authors of the Watkins Cook Book of 1948. I’m all for grabbing the wheel and steering peanut butter onto the savory side of the road but something about the horseradish just didn’t work. Only got the score it did due to nutritional value.

Bessie’s Special (1974)
Williams’ Sandwich Recipes
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Ingelhoffer Spicy Brown Mustard
Plussed up rating: 7
Despite being a very 70s sandwich, this was a tasty little combo. If you wanted to schmancy it up you could very easily. Cheese sauce poured over sliced hard boiled eggs and asparagus on whole wheat bread. Definitely recommend plussing it up with something bright and/or acidic. I went with spicy brown mustard but a little lemon juice or Crystal hot sauce would also work.

Christmas Loaf Sandwich (1950)
Prineville’s Favorite Recipes
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Chipotle powder
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2
Kind of love that the authors thought this looked anything like a Christmas sandwich. Setting aside the fact that there were nowhere near enough chopped green olives to make the “green layer” look green, how, exactly, is chicken a go-to for Christmas? It wasn’t terrible. Some folks recoiled in horror at the use of mayonnaise to make the cream cheese more spreadable but not me (though I do think just whipping the cream cheese would’ve been better). A middling sandwich plussed up with a little heat in the form of chipotle powder.

Plus Up Pantry Tour
Usually, between Christmas and New Year's Day, I like to post “lookback videos”. This year, I thought I’d kick things off with and oft requested Plus Up Pantry tour. It took a while to record as you’ll see but it does provide a glimpse at everything I have at my disposal for plus ups.

Not only was it one of NPR’s 350 Books We Love of 2024 but it was also a Top 10 Cookbook! Woot!

Top 5 Olden Tymee Sandwiches of 2024
Next up in the “lookback” series was the top 5 sandwiches of 2024. I limited it to regular sandwiches as a tea sandwich that scored an 8 did so within that category of sandwich. And would never be on the same level as a regular sandwich that scored an 8. Might switch it up next year and do within the categories. Then again, that is more work so…

Top 5 Worst Sandwiches of 2024
If you were hoping for zeros, this video has you covered. Nothing but terribleness. And yes, there were more that fared the same but only had time to scrape 5 together.

Top 5 International Sandwiches of 2024
Just like the top 5 worst sandwiches, this too, was a curated from many. Most international sandwiches are super tasty, if not complex to make. And that the reason they’ve stood the test of time.
