Bologna Salad Sandwich (1951)
The Lunch Box and Every Kind of Sandwich
Rating: 5
Plus up: NEWKS Blazin’ Raisin Hot Sauce
Plussed up rating: 6
I know, I know. You were jonesin’ to see a recipe that called for cooked salad dressing and ground bologna. Thankfully, the vast amount of sugar in the dressing was offset by the vinegar so it was a sweet/savory dressing. While the sweet pickles didn’t help they also didn’t really do harm. I decided to plus it up with some NEWKS Blazin’ Raisin Hot Sauce. Yes, it’s raisin based. But that’s just the beginning. Easily one of the more delicious and complex hot sauces I’ve had in a while like, since Uncle Chainsaw’s Scassa La Boca which is also fantastic.

Connie Onnie Sandwich
GrandadJoe1933
Rating: 7
Plus up: 100% Dark Chocoloate
Plussed up rating: 8
Another sandwich from Grandad Joe who says he would eat these when he was a child. Well, as sweet sandwiches go, it was actually tasty. Keep in mind, when I was a kid I would butter white bread and top it with sugar. So this is not unfamiliar territory. But I felt it needed a little something something and for me that was 100% dark chocolate. Someone suggested toasting the bread and sprinkling cinnamon over the sweetened condensed milk. That does sound quite tasty but would’ve deivated from the original recipe.

Url P. Dandy’s Cave Shrimp Sliders
Alternate History
Rating: 8
By last collaboration between my friends James and Ben, The Dusty Nuttergoose, was a tasty success. This time, I was not sure that would happen. After all, I’ve never cooked shrimp in melted cinnamon candy let alone top that with a coconut yogurt sauce and sautéed mushrooms. Yet, somehow, the intensely flavored candy mellowed out when heated and all the flavors just kind of worked. Go figure. I was surprised by the number of commenters who thought that I either used AI or greenscreen to get James and Ben in there but I can assure you, they were in the kitchen with me. Peanut Butter, Cheese, and Olive Sandwich (1925)
The Chattanooga News
Rating: 4 1/2
Plus up: up to you!
It’s always interesting to me when I see a sandwich recipe that has ingredients that would go together well if they were paired with only one of the other ingredients. Cream cheese and green olives? Yep! Cream cheese and peanut butter? Yep. Peanut butter, cream cheese, and green olives? Ehhhhh, not so much. Still, there could be potential which is why I asked you for plus up ideas. We will definitely be revisiting this in a week our two.

4th of July Sandwich (1929)
The Richmond Item
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic (SPOG)
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2
Yeah, so the only thing that made this a “4th of July Sandwich” was the part where they wanted you to tie a red, white, and blue ribbon around. Which means any sandwich could be a 4th of July Sandwich lol Chicken, mayonnaise, cream cheese, chopped walnuts and a bit too much bread. And no seasoning. Not offensive but also not interesting. But, that leaves the door wide open with regards to plus ups. I opted for the SPOG seasoning blend which made the sandwich more enjoyable.

Swissnut Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches
Rating: 6
Plus up: Dijon Mustard and the Grilled Cheese Treatment™
Plussed up rating: 7
Notable for the fact that we got to use a dark bread, I was worried that the Swissnut (man, the author of 1,001 Sandwiches loooooved portmanteaus) was going have the filling falling out all over the place. Seasoned, nutty, grated Swiss cheese with walnuts and no binder. Thankfully the butter on the bread helped keep things in place. Wanted a little contrasting flavor and opted for Dijon mustard. And, of course, I had to give it the Grilled Cheese Treatment™ (no, that is not really trademark, just goofing around.

Guedille au Poulet et Bacon (Canada, Quebec)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Pickley pop of capers
Plussed up rating: 8
This was a tasty little chicken salad sandwich notable for the tang of sour cream and the addition of back. Oh, and that it was served in a top split hot dog bun like the ones used for Lobster Rolls. Plussed it up with the pickley pop of capers to provide a bright counterpoint to the mayonnaise.

In The Chips with Barry
🇺🇸 Sprouts Cherry BBQ potato chips
Talk about a disappointment. I’ve had some tasty chips from Sprouts so I know they can make em. But this had zero BBQ and only a hint of cherry. And the cherry had an artificial cherry flavor at that. Highly unrecommend.
🇯🇵 Koikeya Spicy Chili and Seaweed potato chips
Now these, these were buttery and delicious with a kick of heat. And, of course, that distinctive nori (seaweed) flavor that I love.
🇯🇵 🇺🇸 Calbee Spicy Korean BBQ potato chips
And we closed out the week with another well-executed flavor from Calbee, a Japanese company that is making this chips in America for the American market. All three of the flavors I’ve try from them in this series has been great. Including these. Sweet, savory, slightly spicy. If you’ve got a World Market near you, I highly recommend you pick some up.
Can It Sandwich?
Let’s just say I gave the Sprouts Cherry BBQ potato chips a shot at redemption thinking that the butter might help. And it backfired.
Off to source more sandwich recipes, buy more ingredients, and taste more sandwiches of yore!
Cheers,
Barry
Great show in Toronto, Barry and so nice to meet you after the show - thanks for coming and please come back soon!
