Carl’s Gizmo
Iowa State Fair (and apparently others?)
Rating: 8
Plus ups: Aleppo chili flakes
Plussed up rating: 8 1/2
There was zero chance this was going to be bad. Sausage and hamburger browned up then topped with marinara and mozzarella then broiled? Yeah no brainer. The only thing I was missing was little heat which the Aleppo peppers provided nicely.

Ham and Lettuce Sandwich (1924)
New Presentation of Cooking with Timed Recipes
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: James River BBQ sauce and baby Swiss cheese
Plussed up rating: 7
Often times on Sandwiches of History, a sandwich will have a simple name like the Egg Sandwich. But then it’ll five other ingredients too. Well, aside from buttered bread, what you see is what you get with the Ham and Lettuce Sandwich. The upside of having such a basic sandwich base is that the plus up potential is huge. I opted for sweet, smoky James River BBQ sauce usually reserved for the North Shore Roast Beef (shout out to my man Josh for scoring me the bottle) and baby Swiss cheese which made it a more well rounded sandwich.

Peanut Butter and Egg Sandwich (1918)
New Recipes for 50
Rating: 1
Plus up: garbage can
For the record, I’ve had sandwiches that use peanut butter and egg before to delicious result. I think the reason this didn’t work for me was two fold. First, celery salt and dice green bell pepper threw things off for me in the flavor department. And second, the mashed up hard boiled, while great in egg salad, was texturally odd with the peanut butter. Oh well, can’t all be home runs.

Sandwich (1927)
Congressional Club Cook Book
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: All the black pepper and cucumber
Plussed up rating: 6
The base sandwich had slight textural issues and was a bit bland. Not surprising given it was mashed hard boiled egg, cottage cheese, and mayonnaise. Black pepper brought some much needed bite and the cucumber brought both freshness and texture. It’s not enough to make me want to eat it again but it was enough to make me want to finish it.

Texas Sandwich (1909) w/Guest Host Bo Evans
The Up-To-Date Sandwich Book
Rating: 1 1/2
Plus up: Mayonnaise, red wine vinegar, and heirloom tomato
Plussed up rating: 2 1/2
When folks sign up to potentially guest host Sandwiches of History, the can choose a recipe themselves or have me choose one. If I select, I take into account dietary restrictions and preferences. Not only did Bo not have any, he asked for “an absolute wild sandwich.” Ask an ye shall receive, my friend. Since Bo is based in Texas, I thought it appropriate to offer up the Texas Sandwich. I’d of thought it would be BBQ of some kind but nope. Calf liver. Bo did an excellent job of hosting and showed tremendous fortitude in trying to plus up what looked like a dry kinda gross sandiwch.

Grilled Sweet Kipper Sandwich
Our History
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Lemon pepper seasoning
Plussed up rating: 6
Despite having luck with sweetness and seafood in the past, I wasn’t sure about this. Honey, kippered herring, and mayonnaise? Still, it turned out ok. Plussed it up with seafood’s friend, lemon pepper seasoning that just so happens to work well with honey too. Probably won’t make it again but I sure finished it.

Bocadillo de Lomo (Spain)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 8
Plus up: Aioli
Plussed up rating: 8 1/2
Seemingly straightforward, this was a delicious combo of pork, olive oil, tomato, and Manchego cheese. But I was missing a little garlic so I plussed it up with a little aioli. Some folks expressed surprise that I didn’t add Calabrian chili past or chili flakes. I get why but for some reason I this was one sandwich I wasn’t feeling the need for heat.

In The Chips with Barry 🥔
Trader Joe’s Garlic Butter Irish potato chips
Trader Joe’s Deli Sandwich potato chips
Yes it was Twofer Week on ITCwB and I kicked things off with a couple flavors from Trader Joe’s. Both were tasty but if I had to choose, the Garlic Butter Irish chips win hands down.

Route 11 Chesapeake Crab potato chips
Route 11 Dill Pickle potato chips
We don’t see Route 11 chips out west too often (at least, I don’t). And maybe that’s a good thing. The dill pickle flavor was tasty to be sure but that Chesapeake Crab flavor was outstanding. Probably because they use J.O. Spice as the base.

Absurd Snack Maple Cinnamon Chickpea and Granola Snack Mix
Absurd Snack Rosemary Sea Salt Chickpea and Granola Snack Mix
Wrapped up Twofer Week with a couple of snack mixes from Absurd Snacks. I’d tried these when they first hit the market and dug them immensely. They reformulated so it was time for a revisit. Better than ever!

Can It Sandwich?
Quite the episode to wrap everything up this week. I did not, however, do the signature “all in one” at the end. Something told me that Maple Cinnamon Snack Mix wouldn’t work well with the Garlic Butter Irish potato chips. Just a hunch

Barry’s Ice Cream O’Clock 🍨
Brown Sugar and Vanilla Ice Cream with Jerk seasoning
It has been a while since I’ve made ice cream as my old machine crapped out. Well, I’ve got a new one so here we go! I only have this channel on Instagram and TikTok but considering adding it to YouTube as well. Let me know if that’s of interest.
Anyway on this channel I make sweet/savory and sometimes downright weird ice cream flavors. But there was nothing weird about this one. The herbs and spices in the jerk seasoning blend as well as the habanero pepper, played really well with the brown sugar and vanilla ice cream. Spicy but not crazy spicy. And definitely tasty.

Well, that was a long one, wasn’t it? Thanks for reading all the way down. See you next week!
