This week was a little bit fuller than last. In addition to all the sandwiches, there was a full run of In The Chips with Barry too.
Oh, and shout to Emma for reminding me that my Cameo account was off (it’s back on now, just had it off for those couple of intense day job work weeks)
It’s Father’s Day and if you’ve woken up in a panic because you didn’t secure the perfect gift may I suggest pre-ordering, Sandwiches of History: The Cookbook? He’s gonna love it and, since it doesn’t release until November 5th, you’re off the hook on it not arriving today! It’s win-win!
One last thing, any links that go to Amazon are affiliate links. So if you buy something, I might get .005¢ to put toward sandwich ingredients (It really doesn’t pay much tbh) Any links that don’t just go to products I think you’ll dig anyway.
Ok, on to the sandwiches and chips!
Please hit ❤️ if you enjoy the read. Thanks!

Martino (Belgium)
International Sandwich Sunday
Original rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Ruffles Simply Sea Salted potato chips
Plussed up rating: 8
I went into this knowing that raw beef isn’t for everyone. But I’ve done the Cannibal Sandwich as well as the Ground Beef De Luxe Sandwich, both of which featured raw beef so I figured why not? The beef was of course seasoned up with tasty things like capers and chives. Then on top of that was hard boiled egg slices, tomato, lettuce, ketchup, tomato, and anchovy filets. With all of that going on I kind of forgot it was raw meat at all. And, given all the flavor, I decided plus up should bring a little crunch and a touch of salt. This, the Ruffles Simply Sea Salted potato chips.
Then I kinda went off on a tangent by making a burger out of the meat mix, adding Swiss cheese, Dijon mustard and more. A tasty distraction

Bacon and Watercress Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches
Original rating: 7.5
Plus up: Seasoned slice of tomato
Plussed up rating: 8.5
Not gonna lie, there are many sandwich recipes from 1936’s 1,001 Sandwiches that give me pause. But with that many recipes, they’re bound to have a tasty one here and there. Enter the Bacon and Watercress Sandwich. Peppery meets smoky with the richness of mayonnaise? Yes, please, and thank you. Opted to plus it up a la a BLT with a seasoned slice tomato. Can definitely recommend it.

Oyster Sandwich (19017)
Salads and Sandwiches
Original rating: 3
Plus up: Daylight Seaweed Company Everyday Seasoning
Plussed up rating: 5
A long time ago I made an Oyster Sandwich from 1909 that wasn’t too far off from this one. And as I recall, I was not into it. Turns out, I wasn’t really into this one either. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy oysters. But the texture on this just…no. I did manage to plus up the texture with a little furikake but yeah, not making this again.

Angela Poe Russell Sandwich (1937)
Our History
Original rating: 7
Plus up: Slice of cheddar cheese
Plussed up rating: 8
Peanut butter is one fascinating ingredient. Not only can it do sweet or savory, oftentimes if can act as a bridge between the two in the same sandwich. Take the Angela Poe Russell Sandwich share with my by, well, Angela Poe Russell. She started making these as a kid and still enjoys it. Peanut butter, jelly, and popcorn already had a sweet savory thing going on but with the plus up cheddar cheese it really amped up. And I have to say it was tasty. Some pointed out that you could cut to the chase and just used cheese flavored popcorn. Technically true, but I kinda like the way the cheese felt in the sandwich.

Cream Cheese and Thousand Island Dressing Sandwich (1925)
Ye Kirke Cookerie
Original rating: 6
Plus up: Sliced cucumber
Plussed up rating: 7
Yeah…this video. Not sure why I stated with such robust confidence that Indianapolis was in Illinois but here we are. D’oh! At any rate, this was clearly meant to be a mild if not interesting tea sandwich of sorts. And really you could mix a dressing of choice with cream cheese and it would be enjoyable. For a little more substance and freshness I opted to plus it up with sliced cucumber. And I gotta say, it was niiiiice.

Deviled Peanut Sandwich (1937)
Searchlight Recipe Book
Original rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Papa’s Peppers Extreme Blend
Plussed up rating: 8 1/2
When I saw the name on this recipe I thought, “hmm, I’ve never heard of deviled peanuts before.” There’s a reason and that is they don’t exist. No this “deviled” sandwich combined deviled ham (which is usually minced up ham, hot sauce, vinegar, mayonnaise, and Worcestershire sauce) with peanuts and dill pickles. It was good! Added a pinch of Papa’s Peppers Extreme Blend to plus it up with a little devilish heat. Did the trick nicely.

Catch of the Season Sandwich (1932)
New Ideas in Sandwiches
Original rating: 5.5
Plus up: Horseradish | J.O. Spice | Horseradish + J.O. Spice
Plussed up rating: 7 | 7 | 8.5
This was the first recipe from New Ideas in Sandwiches of 1932 sent in by Rachel - thank you!) and sure enough, they paid off that name. Combing shrimp with a white sauce? No brainer. But then making it a double decker with the second layer be scrambled eggs with pureed tomatoes stirred in? Um, what? The net result was pretty much that - um, what? It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t cohesive. Plussing it up with horseradish gave it a nice kick that helped to unify things as did the J.O. Spice. But when plussed up with both, this sandwich was singing!

In The Chips with Barry
Full week last week so let’s get into it!
Kent Crisps Lamb & Rosemary potato chips (UK)
These crisps from the UK were nicely balanced. They did have a savory, slightly lamb-like flavor (despite not having any lamb squeezin’s in there) as well as deft touch of rosemary. And you could still taste the potato. While not a powerhouse flavor, definitely worth eating.

Baja Fiery Mango Doritos (US)
Fun fact, I like Doritos. I think they make tasty snacks. And I really enjoyed seeing them start to stretch with their ketchup (meh) and hot mustard (brilliant!) flavor a while back. Naturally, upon hearing about these I was eager to try them. But while did a decent job of balancing mango, heat and Dorito flavor, it was just too cloyingly sweet for my tastes. Because it was so sweet it kind of took down the mango flavor a bit too. Oh well, can’t all be home runs.

Dutch Crunch (from Old Dutch) Bistro Blend potato chips (US)
This was a lovely combination of herbs and savory elements like garlic and onion. Just a tasty savory chip. It isn’t so much the kind you crave, but it is the kind you want when you’re having a sandwich for lunch.

Can It Sandwich?
I think these performed as-expected when sandwiched. The Lamb and Rosemary crips got on nicely with the butter and soft bread as did the Bistro Blend (actually, the chips got even better thanks to the butter). Unfortunately, the Fiery Baja Mango Doritos could not be saved by sandwiching and also managed to deep-six the all in combo sandwich at the end. Le sigh.

Thanks for again for following Sandwiches of History (and for subscribing to this recap!)
Have a great week!
Cheers!

🥪
Three things I’m looking forward to seeing in this week sandwich lineup
1) ham/cheese/pineapple SOUNDS amazing. I feel like the type of cheese the recipe calls for could make or break this … or maybe they have you use the whole pineapple skin on 🤯
2) hot salad sandwich scares me (no further comment to avoid being jump scared)
3) since I started following your page Barry (about March/April of this year) I have yet to see any sort of sandwich whether it be plus up or original ingredient … that called for chocolate… 🤔🧐
Needless to say, I am SOOOO excited for this weeks sandwich lineup. Let’s kick this Monday off… WITH A GO ! 🎉
Thanks Barry!
