Man, getting this out while doing a mini tour of Sandwiches of History: LIVE! is not easy! Currently writing this in Boston which just flew into today. Pretty stoked because tomorrow, before the show, I get to visit America’s Test Kitchen studios (ATK co-host Julia Collin Davison is my special guest for Sandwiches of History: LIVE! tomorrow night!) Then we’re off to New Orleans for the last stop on this leg (Chef Mason Hereford will be my special guest there! Woot!) Anyway, on to the sandwiches (and chips!)

Sausage Sandwich (1964)
The Sandwich Book
Rating: 2
Plus up: Trash
I know, I know. How can a sandwich that gets trashed merit anything but a zero? Will between the odd meat Vienna sausages and the peanut butter, you’ve got some protein. And the bread provides at least a little fiber. So…yeah. That’s all it had going for it.

Island Sandwich (1958)
Good Housekeeping’s Book of Breads and Sandwiches
Rating: 5
Plus up: Bacon
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2
Exoticism rears its head yet again the naming of this sandwich. At least they didn’t try to tie it to a specific island. But if "island” is in the name of a mid-century recipe, you can rest assured it involves pineapple. Sure enough, this one did and paired with chicken and processed cheddar cheese. The chicken wouldn’t have been my first choice it was pretty ok. Bacon, which improves just about any sandwich, came to the plus up rescue.

Horseradish Sandwich (1912)
Underwood Chicken Spread TV Commercial
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Tomato
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2
I try really hard not to change the focus of a sandwich. But in this case I dropped the ball. Don’t get me wrong, adding the seasoned tomato was tasty. But it did make it more of a tomato sandwich than a Horseradish Sandwich. Might have to take another run at this one.

Princess Sandwich (1901)
Recherché Side Dishes
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Roquefort blue cheese and arugula
Plussed up rating: 7/12
Yet another sandwich that calls for us to pound everything to a paste, then pass it though a sieve. If I had to guess, and I do, it was that it was untoward for princesses to chew? I don’t know. It tasted good but even better when plussed up with Roquefort and arugula. Seems ripe for a Recipe Remix.

Eggplant Tomato Sandwich (1935)
Washington Post
Rating: 7
Plus up: Scassa La Boca Hot Sauce
Plussed up rating: 8
Presenting the Eggplant Parmesan Sandwich that wasn’t quite eggplant parmesan. It used “yellow cheese” and tomato instead of sauce but was very adjacent. Not bad. But plussed up with the Scassa La Boca hot sauce from Uncle Chainsaw’s with it’s Calabrian chilis, white balsamic vinegar, and garlic, man that really made it work.

Gourmet Grilled Cheese
Our History
Rating: 9
Plus up: Chili powder
Plussed up rating: 9 1/2
Ah yes, the recipe from the guy’s roommate’s recently deceased estranged uncle. This was tasty using two great melting cheeses - havarti and provolone. But thing that made this was that rather simple pinot noir blueberry jam. A fruit and cheese plate in melty crusty form. Plussed it up with a little chili powder to at some depth. So good.

Breakfast Sandwich (Ghana)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Ayoh! Foods Tangy Dijonayo
Plussed up rating: 8
I must admit, I am not sure what makes this uniquely Ghanian but it is apparently well known and loved there so I was in. Scrambled eggs with scallions, red onions, and tomatoes in a nice toasted roll. What’s not to love? Could’ve gone the cheese route but opted for the Tangy Dijonayo with chunks of cornichons and it was delicous.

In The Chips with Barry 🥔
Red Rock Deli Malaysian Beef Rendang potato chips (Australia)
Man, Red Rock Deli out of Australia should teach American potaot chips companies what time it is when it comes to making interestingly flavored kettle cooked chips. Don’t get me wrong, Kettle Brand does an admirable job wading in from time to time but Malaysian Beef Rendang? Dang! So complex, so good.

Hawaiian Brand Sweet & Spicy Pineapple potato chips (USA)
Ah Hawaiian Brand. I’ve tasted some solid flavors from them and some bad ones as well. Thankfully, these delivered on the sweetness of pineapple without being cloying. And the level of heat and choice of habanero was excellent.

Hardbite Smoked Paprika and Garlic potato chips (Canada)
Hard to go wrong with smoked paprika and garlic with potatoes in pretty much any application. These were tasty though there was a little sweetness to them that I could’ve done without.

Can It Sandwich?
The Can It Sandwich? that dares ask, “did Can It Sandwich? even happen, bro?” I deleted or forgot to record the intro, making, and tasting. If I was to place a bet it would be deleted. At any rate, I managed to hang on to the slo-mo sandwich making so there’s that?
