And we are back. Yes, it is Sunday and time for a look back at the sandwiches that defined our weekā¦ok, well, my week? From potato chips to American cheese and mint to mushrooms, this weekās sandwich fillings ran the gamut, as the kids say. What? They donāt say that?! Iāve been greatly misinformed. Iām off to speak to the manager!

Potato Chip Sandwich (Japan, šÆšµ)
International Sandwich Sunday
Original rating: 8.5
Plus up: Bachanās Spicy Japanese Barbecue Sauce
Plussed up rating: 10
Well, this was a delight. Despite what Tasty Japan said, I canāt see this being offered in convenience stores as the chips would sog out (which many of you pointed out as well). Still, the combo of coleslaw with kewpie mayo and slated potato chips between toasted, buttered Shokupan (Japanese Milk Bread) was delightful. But I wanted a little heat, a little sweet and a little savory. Naturally, I found all three in the Bachanās Spicy Japanese Barbecue Sauce. It is so tasty. Even if you donāt by from that annoying affiliate link I just wrote, do pick some up. #worthit

Yum-Yum Sandwich (1925)
Ye Kirke Cookery
Original rating: 8
Plus up: Capers
Plussed up rating: 8.5
The name of this sandwich made me think it might be something sweet that kids would like. Most kids Iāve know, however, wouldnāt touch a sandwich made from cream cheese, watercress, ham, and mayonnaise with a ten foot pole. I, however, would. Well, I mean, not the pole part. At any rate, sweet cream cheese, peppery cress (the store said it was watercress but watercress doesnāt grow in soil soā¦) and smoky ham made for a tasty bite. But I also wanted something a little bright. It was capers to the rescue with their nice pickley pop!

Brunchwich (1965)
The 1,000 Fabulous Sandwiches
Original rating: 6.5
Plus up: Bacon and Pepper Plant Hot Sauce
Plussed up rating: 8
This was a fun little number. We toasted the bread on one side, buttered the other, then made a Swiss cheese frame for an egg. My only nit is that the 15 minutes of baking called for in the recipe ensure a yolk that wasnāt runny. Other than that it was tasty. For the plus up I went full brunch by adding bacon and Pepper Plant Hot Sauce. That hot sauce, which is made with jalapeƱos, dehydrated onions, and dehydrated garlic, has a nice depth of flavor. And if I have to tell you why bacon is tasty and worked well here, you may need to see your doctor.

American Cheese and Mint Sandwich (1924)
New Presentation of Cooking with Timed Recipes
Original rating: 7
Plus up: Curry powder
Plussed up rating: 8
Not gonna lie, I was expecting to hate this sandwich. First, Iām not the biggest fan of mint. I donāt hate it but itās not a flavor I craveā¦except for in Thin Mints. Donāt at me, bro. Yet, this turned out to be kinda delightful. The balance of the cheese and the mint along with the vinegar just worked. And the mint and vinegar combo reminded me a bit of chutney. So, I plussed it up with curry powder and man, did it to the trick. And yes, I do think itād would even better with cheddar.

Mushroom Sandwich (1917)
Salads and Sandwiches
Original rating: 7
Plus up: Garlic powder and onion powder | Roquefort blue cheese
Plussed up rating: 8 | 6
This recipe was a bit of head scratcher. It wasnāt that it didnāt have amounts, Iām used to that. Nor was it that we had to peel the mushrooms. Iāve seen esteemed chef Jacques PĆ©pin do on his cooking shows a few times. No, it was the fact that despite being named the Mushroom Sandwich, it had chicken in it. Shouldnāt it have been named the Chicken and Mushroom Sandwich?
At any rate, the combo sautĆ©ed in butter the spread between bread was nice. Plussing up with a little garlic powder and onion powder, which is always a one-two punch of flavor worked great. I really though it would benefit from a little Roquefort blue cheese but it ended up taking over resulting in a minus down. Not terrible but not better. Oh well, canāt all be home runs, right? In case you missed it:

Billyās Irish Philly (recent history)
recipe courtesy of my man Billy Z
Original rating: 9
Plus up: Cherry peppers
Plussed up rating: 9.5
When my man Billy Z first shared Billyās Irish Philly I was ready to give it a go. But in atypical fashion I held back until the day before St. Patrickās Day. This mash up of a corned beef sandwich and a Philly cheesesteak. The Guiness cheese whiz with griddled corned beef and onions was was taaasty. I would say that the recipe made way too much cheese sauce but that would mean having leftover cheese sauce was a bad thing. And it definitely is not. If you want to give it a go Iāve linked to the recipe on Billyās website above.

A lovely plethora of plussed up sammies! Thank you!
Your "On the menu this week" reminds me of our old school lunch menus that were posted in the local Pennysaver! (And yes, I realize that makes me sound like Mr. Burns)
