This week saw no clunkers when it comes to sandwiches! A rarity and almost unbelievable given some of the recipes.

Salmon Sandwich (1918)
Florida Salads
Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Bachan’s Spicy Japanese Barbecue Sauce
Plussed up rating: 8
I was not expecting a salmon sandwich from a book named Florida Sandwiches and published in 1918 to be anywhere near tasty, let alone ok. Yet it was! Salmon with a little mayo, celery, and green olives. Plussed it up with a little sweet/savory/spice Japanese barbecue sauce from Bachan’s that added a whole other layer of tastiness.

Prune Sandwich (1940)
The White Lily Cooking Guide
Rating: 4
Plus ups: Muenster cheese
Plussed up rating: 4
This one was a bit of an oddball. Almonds toasted in shortening combined with prunes, and India Relish. I didn’t really help things by adding Muenster cheese either though it didn’t make it worse. I do think my original thought of Manchego would work but alas, one cannot have infinite cheese options on hand.

Tuna Sandwich (1914)
The Neighborhood Cook Book
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Capers
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2
Again, another recipe from the nineteen teens involving fish that was surprisingly good. I really enjoyed the walnuts in there. Plussed it up with the pickely pop of capers which livened things up a bit.

Cabbage and Potato Sandwich (1917)
Salads and Sandwiches
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Dried dill weed
Plussed up rating: 6
This was basically a potato salad with cabbage between bread. And it was pretty ok. As some pointed out, cooking the contents would’ve been great. But that will have to wait for a Recipe Remix. Didn’t have fresh dill on hand so I used dried dill weed because dill and potatoes? C’mon!

Luncheon Sandwich (1920)
Calendar of Sandwiches and Beverages
Rating: 8
Plus up: Pepper jelly
Plussed up rating: 8 1/2
Welcome to the no-brainer sandwich of the week. I mean, ham and Gruyere cheese between bread that is then dipped in a seasoned egg/milk mixture and fried in butter. Sure, it ain’t the healthiest but boy, was it tasty. Added a little sweet heat by plussing it up with pepper jelly. Man, I could go for one right now.

No Name Sandwich (1973)
Suppers and Buffets
Rating: 5
Plus up: Trader Joe’s Cashel blue cheese potato chips
Plussed up rating: 6
I have to say, the combo of ham, chicken, cottage cheese, and prunes kinda sounds 70s right off the bat. But it wasn’t bad. Plussed it up with a little blue cheese potato chips for a little crunch and pop. I’ve seen folks comment that you can’t get those chips at Trader Joe’s anymore. Get thee to World Market and look for Keogh’s as I believe they are the ones who made them for Trader Joe’s (and check out their other flavors too as they are taaasty)

Sandwichon (Dominican Republic)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Old Bay Hot Sauce
Plussed up rating: 8
This was a tasty, if not rich, sandwich. Definitely a party or special occasion sandwich made as an entire loaf. I sized it down a bit since I would be the only one eating it. Tasty on it’s own, I could help but plus it up with something decidedly not Domincan, Old Bay Hot Sauce. No regrets.

In The Chips with Barry 🥔
Hunter’s Gourmet Foie Gras Potato Chips
United Arab Emirate
It has been a long time since I’ve tasted foie gras but I have to say these brought it right back. On the small side due to the packaging but pretty dang tasty.
Balaji Wafers Chilli Tadka Potato Chips
India
Apparently, tadka is akin to a tarka which is a highly seasoned oil that is drizzled on food just before serving to amp up the flavor. These had an Indian cuisine flavor to them (could’ve been asafetida) and were nicely spicy.
Koikeya Special Garlic flavored Potato Chips
Japan
Google Translate did not help when trying to figure out why these would be considered special garlic flavor. One bite, though, and I knew. That slightly sweet, nutty flavor of roasted garlic on tasty potato chips. Yes, please, and thank you.
Can It Sandwich?
As you’d imagine, all three could sandwich quite nicely on their own. But together…not so much. Oh well, 3 out of 4 ain’t bad.
Thanks for watching and reading! Hope to see you on the road!
Cheers,
Barry 🥪
I grew up eating potato salad sandwiches. So tasty. But my favorite was cold baked beans sandwiches with ruffle potato chips to yum it up. The texture of the cold beans and the crunchy chips encased with soft white bread, heaven! When I discovered I am a celiac I hated all the gf bread, and just dipped the beans onto the chips.
