Dagwood’s Favorite Sandwich (1947)
The Journal of the Société des Gentilshommes de Cuisine
Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: James River BBQ Sauce
Plussed up rating: 8 1/2
It was interesting to see a Dagwood Sandwich recipe that was not official but still somehow tied to the Blondie comic strip, even if it was tangential. This recipe was from the actor Arthur Lake, who played Dagwood in the Blondie TV show in the 1940s. What set this one apart is that it prescribed what was to be in the sandwich as opposed to the official Blondie Cook Book which left it pretty wide open. Here everything from ham to rich peanut butter to tangy dill pickles to salty potato chips came into play. And while ridiculous in size, it was quite tasty. The only plus up I could imagine was a little sweet tangy BBQ sauce and worked quite well.

Fiesta Beef Roll Sandwich (1975)
Walk About Parties
Rating: 8
Plus up: Avocado
Plussed up rating: 8 1/2
Yeah this one just screamed 1970s suburban taco night. From the seasoning of the beef to the buttery black olives to the salty, crushed up corn chips, this was nostalgia all the way. Plussed it up with a nice bit of rich avocado but just as easily could’ve ketp the theme going with sour cream.

Bologna Sandwich (1978)
Chapel Hill Newspaper
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Peanut butter
Plussed up rating: 6 /12
First off, yes, I am trying to use up that loaf of raisin bread that bought. At first blush, I wasn’t so sure about whether bologna would go with raisin bread. But I also thought that about the Tuna and Raisin Bread sandwich and was pleasantly surprised. Same thing happened here but to a lesser extent. The original with the cream cheese was pretty ok. Plussed up with peanut butter which does an great job bridging sweet/savory definitely helped a bit.

Garlic and Nut Butter Sandwich
Dragnet
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Basil | Shiso | Thai Red Curry Paste | Basil & Thai Red Curry Paste
Plussed up rating: 7 | 7 | 7 1/2 | 8
I honestly can’t tell if the writers of Dragnet meant this as a joke or not. It sounded like a joke when I saw the episode. But once again peanut butter comes through pairing nicely with the garlic and cream cheese. That combo left me with multiple thoughts on the plus up. So I did three, which all worked really well. But the combo of basil and Thai red curry paste worked the best of all. Would definitely make that again.

Egg Sandwich (1925)
The Richmond Item
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Aioli
Plussed up rating: 7
I have never heard of adding flour to eggs but hey, there’s a first time for everything, right? I expected the eggs to have an uncooked flour taste but they didn’t. The only thing I can figure is that it help make the egg go farther from a budgetary standpoint. I know most expected me to plus it up with hot sauce and that is my usual go-to. But for some reason I wanted the garlicky goodness of aioli. No regrets.

Indian Sandwich (1910)
Light Entertaining
Rating: 4 1/2
Plus up: Lemon juice and black pepper
Plussed up rating: 5 1/2
Not sure why the authors thought pounding sardines with anchovy paste and olive oil would be representative of Indian cuisine of any kind. It wasn’t terrible but a bit dry, even with the olive oil. A little lemon juice and black pepper perked things up and brought just enough moisture to the party to make it salvageable.

Chimichurri Dominico (Dominican Republic)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 8 1/2
Plus up: Fried egg
Plussed up rating: 9
This was an interesting recipe. From the veggies wozzed up in the food processor then mixed in and cooked with the beef to the orange juice in the chimi sauce. It was very flavorful and delicious. I think next time I’d squeeze out the liquid from the veggies and definitely use thick slices of onion and tomato as they did fall apart a bit on the grill top.

In The Chips with Barry
🇨🇦? 🇺🇸? Pics Baby Back potato chips
These were pretty good. Tasted of ribs a bit and barbecue sauce. I could’ve sworn they were sent in from Canada but honestly at this point I am not 100% sure.
🇹🇼 Hokkaido Creamed Corn Cheetos
These almost felt like eating cereal. Almost. But they really did taste like creamed corn (and didn’t have the awful texture)
🇺🇸 Lay’s Bacon Grilled Cheese potato chips
These were surprising. Both in the fact that they had zero bacon flavor and in that they still tasted good! Go figure.
It can…or can it?
Alright, time to get some sleep. See you next week.
Cheers,
Barry
