Salmonburger (1967)
Salute To Salmon
Rating: 6
Plus up: Mayonnaise and furikake
Plussed up rating: 7
We started things off this past week with a burger. A salmonburger to be specific. The usual suspects were all there, canned salmon, egg, and breadcrumbs. But also featured bacon and tomato which was nice. Thing is, it didn’t have any sort of sauce or mayonnaise. Corrected that with the plus up and added in some furikake which goes well with tomato and salmon.

Berlin Sandwich (1909)
The Up-To-Date Sandwich Book
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Fried sichuan peppercorns
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2
Still no clue why something name the Berlin Sandwich would feature Neufchâtel cheese. The combo of the cheese and the mayonnaise made for a rich sandwich. Which meant the salty olives kinda popped. Added some crunchy fried Sichuan peppercorns for texture and their citrusy, numbing notes that worked well with everything in there.

Smothered Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches
Rating: 7
Plus up: Grated nutmeg and black pepper
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2
This really should’ve been named the Ham Soufflé Sandwich because let’s face it, it ain’t really “smothered.” Not withstanding, it was a tasty little number with the mustard in the egg whites. Adding in the warmth of freshly grated nutmeg and the bite of black pepper made it just that much better.

Aristocrat Sandwich (1932)
Purity Cook Book
Rating: 4
Plus up: Creole seasoning blend
Plussed up rating: 4 1/2
This felt like one of those “what do we have in the fridge” sandwiches. In no world do I actively want to eat a sandwich with raw bell peppers, raw onion, and tomato. But given they are associated with creole cooking, I figure why not lean into it by plussing it up with a creole seasoning blend. It helped but couldn’t make into something I’d want to eat again.

Motor Sandwich (1920)
Calendar of Sandwiches and Beverages
Rating: 6
Plus up: Black pepper and parsley
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2
Ah yes, the Motor Sandwich. So nice and light with it’s blue cheese, butter, and mayonnaise. Lol Yeah, it was rich. And it was tasty. But it needed something to punch though all of that. So I went with parsley and black pepper which did a nice enough job. Definitely would not want an entire sandwich though.

Bacon Butter Sandwich
The Church Cook Book
Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Arugula
Plussed up rating: 8
Leave it to The Church Cook Book of 1908 to propose bacon mashed in butter as a sandwich filling. Tasty, if not ill-advised for frequent consumption? Plussed it up with the peppery bite of arugula to help contrast the richnesss.

Islak Burger (Turkey)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 8 1/2
Plus up: Parmesan cheese
Plussed up rating: 9
You’d never know from watching the final video but I had to make this three times. The first time, I used fresh bread crumbs and the burger fell apart. The second time, I forgot to steam it entirely. Finally, on the third time I got it right. Almost Italian-esque save for the cumin, this had some excellent depth of flavor. And the Parmesan plus up only added to that. Yum. Here’s the recipe I followed.

In The Chips withBarry!
Lay’s Taiwan Japanese Teriyaki Potato Chips
Sweet (though not too much so), a little roasty, overall pretty tasty and definitely reminiscent of teriyaki chicken skewers.
Taylors Mature Cheddar and Onion Potato Crisps
These did have both a cheddar and onion flavor to them but boy howdy was it mild. Also, you’ll notice the video linked above isn’t to YouTube. That’s because it seems I forgot to post it there 🤦♂️
Mr. Singh’s 7 Deadly Sins Potato Chips
I have to give it Mr. Singh’s, they made a chip that is impossibly spicy by using seven of the hottest chilis on earth. Yet, there was also flavor. I just had to fight my way through to taste it. Lol
Can It Sandwich?
As you might imaging, the 7 Deadly Sins potato chip was tasted on it’s own as it would’ve absolutely steamrolled the other flavors. As for the Mature Cheese and Onion, the flavor completely disappeared and therefore could not sandwich. The Japanese Teriyaki Chicken potato chips on the other hand, absolutely can sandwich.
Back next week with seven more sandwiches to recap and more In The Chips with Barry. Thank you for watching, reading, and subscribing to Sandwiches of History!
Cheers,
Barry 🥪
