TL;DR I made seven sandwiches this week, some were great, others less so. Oh and reviewed some thoroughly mid-tier potato chips from the UK. There, I saved you some time, go enjoy your Sunday.
By now I’ve bludgeoned you with the fact that my cookbook, Sandwiches of History: The Cookbook, is available for pre-order. So I won’t belabor the point further except to say…
…that I am planning on hitting the road after the book comes out in November. That’s Right, Sandwiches of History: LIVE!
Let me know what you think if you haven’t already, thanks!

Chancla Poblana (Mexico)
International Sandwich Sunday
Original rating: 9.75
Plus up: Cilantro
Plus up ratings: 10
Mexico knows how to bring it in the flavor department. This sandwich is yet another example of that. Guajillo chilis salsa made spicy by the chili de arbol with chorizo?! Come on. Then it’s topped with avocado, white onion, queso freso, and crema. Ridiculously tasty. And, similar to the Pambazo, top is dunked (or ladled) with that same salsa. Highly recommend this one.

Shredded Carrot Sandwich (1941)
Salads and Sandwiches
Original rating:
Plus up: Sriracha and cilantro
Plussed up rating:
Leave to 500 Tasty Sandwiches of 1941 to answer the question, what if we threw together ground peanuts, shredded carrots, shredded carrots, and mayonnaise? Turns out, it wasn’t bad though 1/4 cup of each left the sandwich a bit mayonnaise-y. Took the plus up in a Thai direction with a little sriracha and cilantro. As some pointed out, a little pickled daikon and you got your self a vegetarian Banh Mi.

Salmagundi Sandwicht (1931)
Keen’s Cook Book
Original rating: 7.5
Plus up: Arugula
Plussed up rating: 8
According to wikipedia, a salmagundi is typically “a cold dish or salad made from different ingredients which may include meat, seafood, eggs, cooked and raw vegetables, fruits, or pickles.” So imagine my delight at seeing beef with a horseradish infused sauce! I was curious about adding unsweetened whipped cream to mayonnaise but as it turns out it lighted it up. All in all a tasty little number. Plussed it up with a little arugula for a peppery bite and it really hit the spot.

Granddad Sandwich (our history)
Original rating: 7.5
Plus up: Swiss cheese and seasoned slice of tomato
Plussed up rating: 8
This sandwich had “grandpa” written all over it. Thick slices of simple ingredients between bread. The only outlier was that it was a sweet onion this time. But sometimes simple is better. And in this case the combo of smoky ham, sweet onion, and that sharp Colman’s mustard work great together. Nudged even further by plussing it up with some nutty Swiss cheese and a seasoned slice of tomato.

Fried Chicken Sandwich (1917)
Salads and Sandwiches
Original rating: 7
Plus up: Cilantro
Plussed up rating: 7.5
So, yeah. When I saw the name of this sandwich in the recipe book I got excited. Then I read the recipe. And while I still wanted to try, I never did understand it. There was no missing text, no typos. It simple called for mixing and egg with milk, dropping the chicken in said mixture, then dropping them into a pan to fry up. But, the flavor of curry butter was fantastic. And the cilantro plus up fit right in. Kind of makes me want to do a Recipe Remix wherein we make a version akin to the Nashville Hot Chicken but with Indian flavors.

Grilled Olive Cheese Sandwich (1964)
The Sandwich Book
Original rating: 7
Plus up: Dill pickle
Plussed up rating: 7.5
This sandwich was definitely of an era. American cheese, canned olives, pimentos…hello, 1960s! But when grilled and after everything melted together it was pretty alright. Couldn’t help but plus it up with a dill pickle. Nice contrast to the other flavors in there.

Virginia Sandwich (1916)
Salads, Sandwiches, and Chafing Dish Recipes
Original rating: 4.5
Plus up: Capers
Plussed up rating: 5.5
And we closed out the week with one of the more deceptive sandwich names I’ve come across. Having lived in Virginia for part of my life, I can honestly say that there is zero chance I’d of guessed sardines would make an appearance in something called the Virginia Sandwich. While it did look akin to cat food, the flavor with the ground peanuts and mayonnaise wasn’t horrible. Plussed up with some capers made it even less “not horrible" lol

In The Chips with Barry
One review to rue them all. That’s right, I said rue. Wordplay!
Kent Crisps Smoked Chipotle Chilli Potato Chips
I’ve had crisps from the UK with a proper amount of heat, so I know it’s not a systemic thing. These had the slightest hint of heat and only a bit more smokiness beyond that. I mean, they weren’t bad but I do expect a bit more when I see chipotle on the bag.
