Busy week, but all in a good way. Got name checked in an article about Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco trying the viral watermelon sandwich (that your’s truly did weeks ago…just sayin’). Tour planning is chugging along albeit slowly. Fall is gonna be bonkers for a variety of reasons including the release of Sandwiches of History: The Cookbook.
Also, just a heads up, I will be on vacation for two weeks starting August 8th. But fret not, as I have lined up quite the guest-host-a-palloza. So, stay tuned for that.
Also, some of the links here (the ones that go to Amazon) are affiliate links. Helps offset cost a tad.
As always, please hit ❤️ and share if you enjoy this little re-cap action. Thanks! Ok, let’s dive in.

Kumru (Turkey)
International Sandwich Sunday
Original rating: 10
Whenever a sandwich calls for a specific kind of bread, I try to oblige. If I can buy it, I try and make it. But I am a mediocre baker at best. Sometimes, like in the case of the bolillos for the Carne Asada Torta, they turn out brilliantly. But I were a betting man, I put my money on what happened with the Kumru rolls. Kumru is, apparently, dove in Turkish. Name as such after the shape of the bread. Well, that went out the window since I had to sub in a doctored up, store-bought bolillo. But, it worked. ANd more importantly the combo of the sujuk sasuage, kashkaval cheese, pickles, pickleed peppers, and mayonnaise was glorious. No plus ups required.

Frankfurt Sausage Sandwich (1909)
The Up-To-Date Sandwich Book
Original rating: 5.5
Plus up: Diced onion and coarse grain Dijon Mustard
Plussed up rating: 6.5
When is a frankfurter a sandwich? When The Up-To-Date Sandwich Book of 1909 says it is. As many pointed out in the comments, putting some color on the frankfurter would’ve made it much better. Still, frankfurter and chopped dill pickle ain’t bad. Plussed it up with a couple of other classic hot dog ingredients (because let’s face it, a frankfurter is very much like a hot dog flavor-wise), diced onion and coarse grain Dijon mustard. Sure, a German mustard might have been more appropriate but what do I look like? A guy made out of mustard?

Midnight Feast (1942)
500 Tasty Sandwiches
Original rating: 6.5
Plus up: Montana Mex Jalapeño Spice Blend (not an affiliate link)
Plussed up rating: 7.5
Every once in a while comes a sandwich that really roils folks. This, is one of those sandwiches. I really the roiling would be the combo of Ameican cheese with kippered herring. To be fair, there was some hemming and hawing about that. But the super controversial move was having the tomato, unseasoned, just plopped onto the top it. Don’t get me wrong, I found it perplexing as well. Just put the tomato in the sandwich for crying out loud. In hindsight, that probably should have been part of the plus up. But the Montana Mex Jalapeño Spice Blend did do a lovely job of not only seasoning the tomato but adding a little heat as well. Tasty stuff. If you’re tempted to try some, now is the time. They are changing their tins so it is currently half off ($3.50 instead of $6.99) while supplies last (no, I am not getting a commission, just sharing a bargain!)

Roast Beef Sandwich with Anchovy Paste (1912)
The Chafing-Dish
Original rating: 2
Plus up: Mayonnaise and thick slice of tomato and pepper
Plussed up rating: 5.5
Every time I post a recipe that calls for anchovy paste, some folks comment how I used way to much. So, gentle reminder, I make sandwiches as written, then plus them up if they have potential. Unlike some sandwiches of the past, I opted not to trash this one. Sure, it was salty, but I wanted to see if it could be at least saved. Turns out yes. Just took a thick slice of tomato and some mayonnaise. I do think it would be interesting to revisit the sandwich still using the anchovy paste but dial it back a lot. Would likely be a more umami-laden sandwich than anything else. And that would be a good thing.

George Sandwich (1905)
Salads, Sandwiches, and Savouries
Original rating: 6
Plus up: Franks RedHot Dill Pickle Hot Sauce and smokey blue cheese
Plussed up rating: 7
Ah yes, the George Sandwich. Undoubtedly named for a king given this was a British cookbook. Not to mention it had two kinds of meat - chicken and ham. The original was fine but it needed a little sumpin’ sumpin’. Well, I guess it needed sumpin’ AND sumpin’. Franks RedHot Dill Pickle Hot sauce and some smokey blue cheese to be specific. Both made this a much more interesting sandwich.

Sardine Loaf Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches
Original rating: 4.5
Plus up: Lemon juice and black pepper
Plussed up rating: 5
When I saw the name of this sandwich, I had my doubts. And while those doubts were not fully realized, it still was just kind of meh. Not bad but also not interesting. Perked things up with the ole lemon juice and black pepper plus up. Definitely helped but didn’t make it a ringer. A lot of folks suggested frying up the filling like a potato cake which does sound interesting. Might have to do a Recipe Remix on this one?

Chicago Club (1909)
The Up-To-Date Sandwich Book
Original rating: 6
Plus up: J.P. Graziano Hot Giardiniera
Plussed up rating: 8
Every once in a while a plus up transforms a sandwich from being something I wouldn’t bother to make again to something I can’t wait to make it again. This was one of those. The middle slice of rye bread was fun if not unnecessary. But that hot giariniera just tied it all together while bringing a little bit of spiciness. Nice.

In The Chips with Barry
Havoc Smoky Nacho Cheese Corn Snacks
I’ve reviewed quite a few snacks and chips from Canada but had not even heard of Havoc before Matthew was kind enough to send them in. They looked identical to fusilli pasta but thankfully they were corn snacks. Tasty, savory base of spices and a slightly spicy cheesiness. I’ve been told their beef bulgogi ones are even better. So, if you’re in Canada, try ‘em out and let me know what you think!

Doritos Japan Avocado and Cheese Flavor
First off, I am not opposed to the combo of avocado and cheese. Heck, the post-run breakfast burrito I get on Saturdays has that combo in it (along with eggs and potatoes, of course). But this was garbage. Slightly sweet with zero other flavor. Not even the signature Doritos flavor. My hope is that I got a bum bag because if not this is an embarrassment for the brand.

Frosta Chips Dill Pickle Potato Chips
It’s not every day that I get to taste potato chips from Norway. In fact, I think these are the first! So bit thanks to Grete for sending them in. Tasty little chips made with skin-on potatoes (which I love). Good balance of flavors and potatoes. As a giant, I do wish they were a little big bigger. But that’s just me being selfish

Can It Sandwich?
Slightly shorter Can It Sandwich? this week since there was no way I was wasting neither bread nor calories on those Doritos. TL;DR both chips sandwiched very well and went together well too. Huzzah!
